Moulmein Residential in Singapore by Woha

“WOHA’s Moulmein Rise Residential Tower is the first project in Singapore to receive the Aga Khan Award for Architecture. The jury’s citation stated “ In a field where attractive gestures on the facade are valued more than spatial quality, the design is an alternative that takes into account the climate, spatial relations, site restrictions and the realities of everyday life. The architects have been able to transform the various constraints into didactic design guidelines, and have responded to them, giving specific answers to each of these constraints. In this sense, they have been able to put forth a product that is different from what is normally found in the real estate market…Moulmein Rise is a design that could be regarded more as a design approach than solely a form.”

“This high rise residential project was designed in 1999. 50 apartments are provided in a slim tower 28 storeys tall. The design examined the high-rise building as an urban object and as envelope. To create a more interesting facade, yet giving functional advantages to the units, 3 facade types were developed that mixed and matched modular functional elements - full height windows, planters and bay windows. These were combined in a random order to produce a visually complex urban object.”
